Enrolment Information

Starting School

In New Zealand it is usual for children to start school when they turn five. Before a child can start school they need to be enrolled. Details of how to enrol your child are given below.

Where to Enrol

Enrolments are taken at the school office. No appointment is needed, just pop in during the school day.

When to Enrol

A good time to enrol your child is just after their fourth birthday. This lets us plan ahead to meet the needs of our community and your child in particular.

If you have not enrolled your child earlier, please don't worry; children can enrol on the day they start school. We will be happy to see you at any time.

What You Should Bring

When you enrol your child you will need to bring the following things with you:

* A birth certificate or Plunket book.
* An up to date immunisation card.
* Proof of New Zealand residency (only for those children born outside New Zealand).

Confirming Your Child's Enrolment

Five weeks before your child's fifth birthday is a good time to confirm your child's enrolment, or enrol your child if you have not already done so. This allows time for your child to join in the pre-entry programme.

Confirming Our Pre-Entry Programme

Children who are about to turn five can participate in our pre-entry programme. This programme consists of one visit a week for the four weeks prior to starting school. The visits run from 9am until 11.30am. Please contact the school office to arrange suitable dates.

First years at school...

Once you have enrolled your child at Aranui Primary School, your child will receive a letter addressed to them in the mail. This letter is written by the members of their class, inviting them to attend pre-entry visits.

Teaching and learning begins on Day One. Five year olds are given a reading folder in which to take their reading books home. These books go home from Monday - Thursday with a Home & School Book, and must be returned the next day. This reading bag and an alphabet activity book are from the Duffy Books in Homes organisation as we are a "Duffy School". We also provide your child with a "learning kit". This kit has ideas of what you can do to help your child with Literacy and Numeracy. These kits are to be kept at home.

When parents / caregivers are teaching their child how to write their name, we ask to encourage them to use lower case letters after the initial capital letter. We encourage you to play games with your child to help them to recognise letters and their names.

Joining the New Brighton or Linwood Public Library is free and they have a wonderful selection of books, puzzles and tapes. We encourage all our students to join.
